11.23.14 Patapsco River Cleanup along River Road in Catonsville
On a bright Sunday morning on November 23, the Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a river cleanup for college students who needed service learning hours before the end of the season. Eager to get to work, 5 energetic volunteers set out to clean up trash along River Road in Catonsville and removed 715 lbs of trash, miscellaneous junk and scrap metal!
Besides the usual bottles, cans, food wrappers and plastic bags we find at all of our cleanups, the interesting items found were: Lots of blue, yellow and brown plastic flower pots, motor oil containers, fuel mix can, QT Electronic Cleaner, car parts, 1 car tire and 1 light truck tire, Kotex pad, toaster, lumber, broom heads, plastic wiring, Simkins Industries receiving papers dumped in abandoned building, "No Stopping on Roadway" sign, bag of yard waste, Halloween candy bucket, a child's plastic bat, parts to a child's 'Big Wheel' toy bike and 2 unopened bottles of Bud Light Platinum!
Based on our volunteers' findings, there's a suspicion that motorists were working on their cars and dumped motor oil containers (some filled with old oil and some were empty) and throwing them downhill from S. Hilltop Road or from the side of River Road. Also, a fair amount of children's toys were found buried in the hillside behind the Simkins receiving area. All trash seems to point from uphill - S. Hilltop Road.
Nature items include: Multi-Flora Rose, Garlic Mustard, a field mouse, woodpecker and deer bones!
We would like to thank the 3 HCC students: Ashley Kelly, Hadi Muhammad and Jamel Walker who have worked very hard to remove a lot of litter along the roadway and in the abandoned Simkins receiving building. We appreciate all of your hard work and could not have made a huge difference without you! Great job everyone!!
Special thanks to the PHG stream captain team including Jessica Cox and Pete McCallum for setting up this event and making sure that our volunteers could get as many student service learning hours before the holiday break!
