5.10.13 Hammonds Ferry - Annapolis access road recon in Baltimore County : Access road that runs parallel to the river between Hammonds Ferry Road and Annapolis Road (MD648) in Patapsco Valley State Park. Recent cleanups in April filled a roll-off dumpster and there is still more to gather up. In the past this area was frequented by dumpers but as of April 2013 one end has been barricaded with logs and dirt while the other end has a locked gate. This series of photos documents what is left to clean up now that dumpers should be prevented from entering the area. Photos by Jon Merryman.

4.26.13 Patapsco River Cleanup & Invasives Removal in Daniels Area of Patapsco State Park : Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a river cleanup/invasive plant removal and watershed scavenger hunt event with 147 participants on a warm Friday moring in April, in the Daniels Area of Patapsco State Park in Howard County. We send a special thanks to Hollifield Station Elementary School who sent their entire 5th grade class along with teachers, staff and parent helpers, as well as some of our PHG friends to help remove 140 pounds of trash/invasive garlic mustard from this watershed area. The breakdown was 18 pounds of trash and 122 pounds of garlic mustard! Quite a bit of the larger trash was a result of debris washed down the river from Tropical Storm Sandy and other major storms in the past 2 years. PHG has been targeting areas throughout the park for the past 13 years removing the invasive garlic mustard plant, teaching others about this "villain of the valley" and problems in general with invasive plants. PHG has been working with Patapsco State Park Rangers to clean up this area, and what a difference these volunteers made in just a few hours! Most of the trash was bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers! Last year the same elementary school did such a good job removing the garlic mustard, there was a noticeable decrease in the amount of invasive garlic mustard to remove!!!

In addition, the class also participated in a hike, watershed scavenger hunt and stream discovery looking for macroinvertebrates!

A special thanks to our PHG Stream Captain Team members Betsy McMillion, Jeff Klein, Pete McCallum, Lisa Wingate, Pat Hatton, Chris Fiorito, Tim Titus, Cathy Hudson, Van Wensil and Jim Lumsden who led the group. We’re also grateful to teacher Lori Speelman from Hollifield Station Elementary School, who organized so many volunteers to come out and lend a helping hand, and the Howard County highways crew for helping us remove the trash! Special thanks to Ms. Varner's Class who removed the most pounds of trash/garlic mustard removing--46 pounds (and our feature photo of this album)!!!!!!! 2nd place was Ms. Powell's class with 35 pounds; 3rd place was Ms. Lutjen's class with 34 pounds and Ms. West's class with 25 pounds! Great work and again, a big thank you to all our volunteers for a job well done!

4.24.13 Cleanup along the Patapsco river with Glenwood Middle School : Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a river cleanup and an invasive plant removal event with 118 participants on a warm Wednesday in April, in the Orange Grove Area of Patapsco State Park in Howard County, Between the parking lot up to Bloede Dam. We send a special thanks to Glenwood Middle School who sent their 7th grade class along with teachers, staff and parent helpers, as well as some of our PHG friends to help remove an amazing 1,907 pounds of trash/invasive garlic mustard from this watershed area. The breakdown was 2,601 pounds of trash and 82 pounds of garlic mustard! Quite a bit of the larger trash was a result of debris washed down the river from Tropical Storm Sandy and other major storms in the past 2 years. PHG has been targeting areas throughout the park for the past 13 years removing the invasive garlic mustard plant, teaching others about this "villain of the valley" and problems in general with invasive plants. Volunteers also noticed a lot of interesting bits of nature including a really old bottl, 10 tires, rubber tubing, tire rim, rope, pieces of carpet, dirty diapers, rusted steel drum, railroad ties, lots of scrap metal pieces, bottom of an office swivel chair, swimming mask, lots of pieces of plastic bags, car bumper, propane tank, steel beam, boots, plastic tarp, bricks, vinyl siding, pair of pants, chicken wire fencing, plastic contractor's bucket, metal can, rusted frame of old tricycle, bottom of a scooter, piece of electric stove heating element, piece of an old chest on a handle, hub caps, pieces of treated wood, canvas bag, fishing weight, plastic and metal pipes, toilet seat, garden hose, cigarette butts, water tube, gloves, vintage beer cans, ladies purse, safety cone, men and women's underwear, crock shoe, trash can lid, and a road railing too heavy to pull out of the river! Some interesting nature type things we saw include: deer bone, goose, squirrel, birds, dead snake, dead snapping turtle, 5 yellow butterflies fluttering around together, trout, kid climbing a tree, snakes living in an old tire, spider, six spotted tiger beetle (green shiny bug-see photo), frog, raccoon skull deer prints and one student even caught a fish in his hand!!!

4.13.13 Catonsville Park Cleanup : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway joined some local organizations for a cleanup last Saturday, April 13th, at Catonsville Park; focusing on the Sawmill Branch. The groups who joined us deserve to be recognized and praised for their incredible help! A total of 61 volunteers of all ages helped remove a remarkable 2370 pounds of trash from this watershed area--and what a difference they made in just a few hours! Susan Koches was the spark that lead this cleanup with the Oakcrest Community Civic Association (OCCA). We are so grateful to her and to the other groups who came out to help--PHG friends, HCC students, St. Mark Cub Scout Pack 456, Sudbrook Magnet Middle School and the OCCA! A very special thanks to our Stream Captain team: Jeff Klein, Darren Lloyd, Pete McCallum, Drew Henderson and Peggy Clark. The garbage we found and removed was the usual type of stream trash we often see during our cleanups; such as bottles, cans, food wrappers, plastic bags & liquor bottles. Some of the more Interesting items found were wallets, a MasterCard, shackles, shopping carts, a lawn mower, bread trays, ~215 lbs. of tires, ~360 lbs. of scrap metal and ~70 lbs.of plastic debris. Nature spotting: a small brown bat.

4.7.13 Hudson Branch Cleanup : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway partnered with the Ellicott City Flood Solutions Group, Center for Watershed Protection and other neighbors and PHG friends to clean up trash and woody debris along a section of the Hudson Branch, flowing from Ellicott Mills Drive down to the West End Shop. Leading this group of 57 volunteers was our PHG stream captain team members Betsy McMillion, Tim Titus, Jeff Klein, Pete McCallum, Darren Lloyd and Drew Henderson. ECFS Team leaders include: Michele Bickley, Gayle arlene Killen, Frank Mello, Kate St. John, Aaron Ross, Wendy McCord, Melane Durantaye-Maier, Frank Durantaye and Nathan Sowers. A total of 57 helpers came out to help remove an amazing 2,170 pounds of trash and debris from this stream section in an effort to remove trash and reduce future damming along this area during storms. They removed the usual type of stream trash normally found including plastic bottles, food wrappers, cans and glass beer and liquor bottles. Some of the more interesting items found included: 2 umbrellas, lots of broken glass pieces, big and small pieces of scrap metal, a car battery, 2 bicycle tires, car tires, a truck bed, weed wackers, a light from a truck, a container for oil, 4 unopened bottles of beer, a watering can, a tablecloth, lots of plastic Dixie cups with dirt in them (plant startings?), a spoon, a Minute Maid plastic bottle, a historic bottle over 100 years old, a grill with a mouse nest living in it, a softball, a baseball, a tire rim, a tork converter, a brake drum, rubber stuff from inside a football, a bicycle with training wheels, a wire rack, a kiddie pool, a blanket, a foam cushion, netting, a metal shelf, a horseshoe, metal fencing, broken garden tool pieces, plastic piping, a plastic lawn chair, metal cans, a metal gate, carpet pieces and an old drum! Nature spotting included: Mallard ducks, a deer leg and lots of birds in the trees!!! The neighbors will let us know if they hear the little frogs peeping at night....PEEP PEEP PEEP!!! Many thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers who came out to help on Sunday morning who were responsible for doing such a great job cleaning up this portion of the Patapsco Watershed!

4.7.13 Sucker Branch Cleanup : Patapsco Heritage Greenway partnered with Cub Scout Pack 495 on Sunday, April 7, to clean up a section of the Sucker Branch stream that runs through historic Ellicott City, removing over a ton of trash! Evidence of this being an old household dumping site. Interesting items found: full raccoon skeleton, lawnmower, typewriter, box springs, bike frame, case of unopened beer cans, metal cables, 50 bags of glass bottles!

4.6.13 Hammonds Ferry : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway lead a large group of volunteers from several organizations on April 16th to clean up 10,135 pounds of trash and other debris along a section of the Patapsco River on Hammonds Ferry Rd. Leading this group of 67 volunteers was our PHG stream captain team members Betsy McMillion, Jeff Klein, Pete McCallum, Darren Lloyd, Drew Henderson, Ted Willard and about ten other PHG members. We also couldn’t have moved this amount of garbage without Cathy Hudson and her truck! The groups helping us were students from HCC, UMBC, Towson University & the St. Joe’s School in Fullerton, USAF 32nd IS from Ft. Meade, Boy Scout Troop 1111 and a few individuals who just came out to help! Aside from the usual stream trash including bottles, cans, plastic bags & food wrappers we always find in our cleanups, volunteers also removed: 59 tires, a pillow on a log, a fire hose, a full size mattress, wooden closet doors, a butterfly knife, a cooler, an inner tube, treated lumber & a large amount of scrap wood, a lot of construction debris, asphalt & cement, plumbing pipes, a wood pallet, window sills, bathroom tiles, a framed wall with a light switch, a recliner sofa & chair, an armless cushioned chair, a white plastic Christmas tree, a car seat, a Chuck E Cheese balloon, a chicken coop, a tricycle, a very old Budweiser can, a toy medieval weapon, underwear, carpet padding, a car bumper & other parts, a plastic tank, a bone-shaped dog bed, a section of sewer pipe, a dining table, 6 chairs & side table, a Burger King Zesty Sauce, a shower stall soap dish along with an entire bathroom demo, ski pants, a large wooden cable spool, a plastic 12" wheel, a piece of garden hose & a Disney Princess Jeep. Some nature spotting included: Birds (Cardinal, Carolina Wren, Carolina Chickadee, Robin, Titmouse, Great Egret, Mallard, Canada Goose, Downy Woodpecker, Brown Creeper, American Crow & Starling), a garden snake, deer bones (skull, cervical vertebrae & some ribs), a decomposing deer leg & probable dog bones (different sizes of scapulas & femurs, a piece of a pelvis, 2 upper left mandibles with teeth--one small and one large). We also put our volunteer engineers to work to create a berm to discourage future dumping down the access road along the river.

3.22.13 River Rd. Cleanup w/Baker Group & Lockheed Martin in Anne Arundel Co. : On Friday, 22 March 2013, employees of Baker Group in Linthicum and Lockheed Martin in Hanover teamed up to clean up a notoriously popular dumpsite in Patapsco Valley State Park -- on River Road in Anne Arundel County. The area hadn't been cleaned for years and had scores of tires, furniture, animal carcasses, as well as the usual bottles and cans. Ironically, this is a popular fishing spot on a pond wedged between River Road and the Patapsco River. There is more to clean up in this area but it looks 110% better now!

3.16.13 Cleanup Along Patapsco River in Orange Grove Area of Patapsco State Park : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a river cleanup on Saturday, March 16th in the Orange Grove Area of Patapsco State Park. Our focus was the Patapsco River on the Baltimore County side from the swinging bridge to the dam. We had several groups join us for this cleanup: PHG friends, HCC students, Boy Scout Troop 1111, Cub Scout Pack 761 and Girl Scout Troop 927. A total of 57 volunteers of all ages helped remove an amazing 2110 pounds of trash from this area-- and what a difference these volunteers made in just a few hours! Special thanks to the Stream Captains: Betsy McMillion, Jeff Klein, Pete McCallum and Pat Hatton! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups, volunteers also removed: a lot of liquor bottles-esp. miniatures, 27 tires, scrap metal & lumber, a light switch, a heavy jacket, a plastic bucket, netting, Styrofoam pieces & peanuts, part of a monster truck, socks, shoes-a Croc & a sandal, pieces of cloth, a wallet, part of a shovel, a faucet, insulation, vodka, an “Open” sign, t-shirts, a blanket, wire, a very large piece of metal machinery, a car speaker, heavy diaper, purple reading glasses, storm weather stripping, a safety cone, rain gutter, a toilet seat, sand bags, a bottle of sand, underwear & a bra, a pool float, a hockey puck, a car seat cushion, a belt, an oil drum, part of a fence, license plate, radio circuit board, cushion foam, dog or deer bones and a decomposing deer carcass.

3.15.13 Tree Maintenance Along Herbert Run at Arbutus Elementary School & UMBC : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway conducted tree maintenance on Friday, March 15th along two sections of riparian buffers along Herbert Run, off of the school property of Arbutus Elementary School and U.M.B.C. Thanks to the the nice neighbors living off of Birch Avenue (The Sparrows & the Muhas), they let us cut through their yard to quickly get to the tree planting site. Based on a request from the Baltimore County Board of Education Maintenance Office, 50 5-foot tall trees were planted in 2010 to expand a riparian buffer along this section of Herbert Run on Arbutus Elementary School property. Several volunteers helped us pull out weeds growing up the trees, trim tree limbs, spread mulch and removed the stakes and tree braiding around the trees. This concludes are 3 year commitment of monitoring and maintaining these trees. Because so many volunteers arrived, we were also able to conduct tree maintenance down the street along another section of Herbert Run off of U.M.B.C. property. Last week during our CSI workshop, we noticed many of stakes were not secure, so we secured them and removed some weeds and readjusted the protective fencing around the trees! Our biggest concern is the invasive plants that appear in the late spring choking the newly planted trees! Special thanks to all our helpers, especially our tree captains -- Betsy McMillion, Tim Titus, Jeff Klein, Pat Hatton, Pete McCallum and all the other volunteers who made this a successful event!

3.9.13 Creek Scene Investigation Workshop on Water Quality Along Herbert Run in Arbutus : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored its spring CSI - Creek Scene Investigation Workshop on Saturday, March 16, 2013 along a section of Herbert Run in Arbutus, Maryland. This stream is part of the Herbert Run watershed area located in Baltimore County near Arbutus Middle School & UMBC properties off Shelbourne Avenue. Participants conducted 5 simple chemistry tests to determine water quality -- ph, temperature, nitrates, phosphates and ecoli. Also participants discovered the diverse macroinvertebrates they found in the stream. This workshop was to encourage participants to discover stream life and understand the types of tests taken to determine water quality, as well as try to determiine the causes of any pollution. Special thanks to PHG members Pete Block, Ann Coren & Pete McCallum for leading the chemistry part of this workshop, and Jeff Klein, PHG's expert on macroinvertebrate identification! 2.25.13 Stream Check Along Sawmill Branch off of Dutton/Edmondson Avenues : On Monday, February 28, 2013, PHG Stream Team Members visited a troublesome area for the past several years located along a section of Sawmill Branch located off of Dutton/Edmondson Avenues in Catonsville. The parking area behind a business establishment continues to be a source of pollution for the trash and other debris that ends up in this section of Sawmill Branch. These photos were reported to Baltimore County for investigation and action to encourage the business owners not only to clean up the trash in this area of the stream, but their parking area where the trash will eventually end up in the stream. We also have requested that the county regularly monitor this area to make sure the businesses comply and keep this section of Sawmill Branch clean!!!!

1.24.13 River Section Check Off Oella Ave. in Oella Near Old Dickey Mill : On Monday, February 28, 2013, PHG Stream Team Members visited a troublesome area reported to us by new stream watcher, Andrea Miralia of historic Oella who lives near the section of the Patapsco River close to the Dickey Mill. After the past few tropical storms and heavy rains that came through the area, a large amount of debris has washed up along the banks of this area, as well as some tires embedded near the riverbanks. This area is targeted for a future TGIF cleanup. Thanks to Andrew for reporting this and keeping an eye on this section of the Patapsco River!!!!

2.24.13 Stream Watcher Training at Arbutus Library : On Sunday, February 24, 16 participants attended the PHG's stream watch training at the Arbutus Branch Library to learn about how to monitor a section of the Patapsco River or stream flowing into the river as part of the Stream Watch Program. Participants learned through a Power Point presentation and discussion on how to identify potential problems, how to report them, as well as establish a baseline report to have a better understanding of the river/stream's condition. Special thanks to presenter, Betsy McMillion and her set up team -- Drew Henderson, Jeff Klein, Darren Lloyd and Pete Block, who helped to run this free training. 2.15.13 Thomas Viaduct TGIF cleanup : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway is developing a program called the TGIF Team. These folks have agreed to meet monthly on Friday afternoons to clean up areas of the Patapsco Watershed in need of their attention. The first TGIF Team stream cleanup was in the Patapsco River at the Thomas Viaduct. Thanks to this wonderful team, and some other PHG friends, we removed an amazing 625 pounds from this watershed area! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots), volunteers also removed some pool “floaties”, a safe, a trash can, carpet, a baby crib, 3 tires, scrap metal & piping and a car bumper. The team also noticed heavy erosion and accumulation of fine sediment. Special thanks to our Stream Captain Team members Jeff Klein, Darren Lloyd and Pete McCallum who led the group. Tim Titus and Kit Valentine also deserve recognition for helping the stream captains. And of course, none of this would be possible without ALL of our volunteers! What a difference a small group made in just a few hours!

2.9.13 Stream Captain Training : On a cold and windy Saturday morning, a Stream Captain Training Workshop was conducted at the Miller Branch Library from 10:30 am - 12 pm. This workshop trained volunteers on how to run a successful and safe stream cleanup. Many of the participants have come to previous cleanups, but were trained on the behind the scenes of how the PHG Stream Team actually runs the events. Pete McCallum was presented a gift certificate in appreciation of his participation as a Stream Captain during 2012. Pete participated in about 95% of all of the volunteer group events and is a great example of a well trained PHG Stream Captain! Lessons learned...it's too early in the season for training...best to hold it in late March when people are thinking about cleanups!!!

Meetings : On Tuesday, January 15, 2013, PHG Members Gary Maule & Steve Stannard made a powerpoint presentation explaining the Patapsco Heritage Greenway's mission, past accomplishments and proposal to move forward toward "Greenway certification" for the Patapsco River Valley. Forty one participants came out to hear this presentation at the Arbutus Branch Library meeting room. 2.7.13 Invasive Plant Check in Bull Run Watershed at CCBC Catonsville Campus in Catonsville : On a chilly February afternoon, the PHG Team went to look at the invasive English Ivy that was literally choking out beautiful old trees on the CCBC Catonsville Campus located off of Rolling Road in Catonsville. In partnership with Treesavers of Catonville founder Alvera Winkler, we will be removing the English Ivy from several trees on the Campus located around Parking Lot A and the old Hilton House area on Friday, May 17, 1-4 pm. 2.3.13--2.10.13 Patapsco River at US 1 : A dump truck load of contractor and household junk was dumped in the park off Route 1 near Elkridge and Relay. A flood event on January 31st cause much of this junk to float away. The weekend of February 2nd-3rd, Jon Merryman, Pete McCallume and Dave Ruch helped ranger Chris Brooks gather up the junk into three smaller piles. The following weekend (9th-10th) a dumpster was dropped off and several park employees and volunteers Kevin Hebert, Jon Merryman, and Jamie Petrucci helped gather up loose items while the big piles were moved by front loader to the dumpster. When all was finished, the dumpster was full and the area looked better than we found it.

12.10.12--12.14.12 Tiber Hudson Branch Watershed Investigation : Under a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the Patapsco Heritage Greenway is working in partnership with the Center for Watershed Protection, to conduct an analysis of the Tiber Hudson watershed in the historic district of Ellicott City. The first part of the study began on Monday, December 10, driving through the watershed areas looking for potential areas to build structures to collect, retain and/or filter urban stormwater, as well as evaluate existing structures for any problems or suggested improvements. The next part of the study will be to have staff and volunteers to drive throughout the entire watershed area looking for possible sources of storm water contamination or ways to slow down or filter the storm water runoff (i.e., rain barrels, rain gardens, correct erosion, etc.) and make suggestions or targeted neighborhoods for storm water pollution education. Special thanks to all the volunteers and staff who have participated in this feature of the study, including: Lori Lilly, Betsy McMillion, Reid Christiansen, Chris , Bryan , Cam MacLachlan, Pete McCallum, Ann Strozyk & intern, Sabrina Fu & daughter, Wendy Alberg, Joel Gallihue and Barb Schmeckpeper. 12.12.12 Cleanup Along Deep Run's Bascom Creek (Shallow Run) in Elkridge : Patapsco Heritage Greenway working with UMBC student Michael Vires conducted an informal cleanup along a section of Deep Run known as Bascom Creek and/or Shallow Run. He collected about 2 full trash bags of debris, which is about 50 pounds. Located off of Glenmore Avenue in Elkridge, this little stream located in a known flood zone was covered with litter that had been washed down nearby storm drains and most likely from items washed from yards during Tropical Storm Sandy. Interesting items removed include: bottles, cans, plastic bags, a huge sign, parts of a car body, cups, oil canister, shards of glass, scraps of metal, foam from a seat, styrofoam cube and part of a fence! Special thanks to Michael and his friend for cleaning up this stream for part of his student service learning requirement at school!!!

12.4.12 Deep Run Large Item Extractions in Elkridge : Stream watcher Jon Merryman got some much needed help from Paul Farragut and two State Parks employees (Dennis Cutcher & Chris Brooks) to remove some large items from the Deep Run portion of Patapsco Valley State Park. WIth the help of a portable saw designed to cut metal, the team cut up and removed a former boat trailer and an oil drum that had been lurking in the park for years. Also removed were 15 tires of assorted sizes.

Pebble Creek (Section of Deep Run) Report from Stream Watcher Gary in Elkridge : PHG Stream Watcher Gary regularly walks along Pebble Creek, a small branch of Deep Run in Elkridge, close to his home.

According to his latest report, Gary writes "The creek has a continuation of the accelerated erosion in previously noted (reference: last January’s Executive Board creek walk) areas. Tropical Storm Sandy probably contributed to the scouring of the turn facing banks. Three more trees along the creek have fallen over and there will be probably the same amount next year. No stream bank stabilization activities are indicated since the trend represents a consistency with expectations.

However, there is drainage from the Timber at Troys Golf Course that has created an 8-9’ gully that is 15’ wide as it intersects the creek. There are signs that there was an attempt at remediation with bails of straw. These measures have failed. Pictures are attached. This might be a place where the county can encourage the Timbers Golf Course to take care of it. If that is the case, let me know how we should proceed.

This section contains 2 sewer covers that appeared to be functioning normally with no spillages. The bottom of the creek in slower areas along the whole length has a layer of yellow gelatin substance covering. I’m not sure of the nature of the phenomenon but I took photos of it for your subject matter experts."

This was reported to our friends at Howard County Department of Public Works Environmental Services and Recreation & Parks for their investigation and request for action to address these issues!

PHG received a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust to fund this project. 11.16.12 Tree Maintenance Along Thistle Run off Frederick Road in Catonsville : The Patapsco Heritage greenway sponsored a tree maintenance event along a section of Thistle Branch, where over 70 trees were planted last year as part of a new riparian buffer. Twenty one energetic volunteers helped pull weeds around the base of the tree, trim dead branches and readjust the tree braiding to make sure the trees were straight and secure from wind and deer! Only one tree did not survive that we planted last year! Special thanks to our PHG Tree Captain team who helped lead the volunteers -- Betsy McMillion, Tim Titus, Kit Valentine and Pete McCallum, and also all the other PHG members, college students and other friends who helped come out and insure that the trees would continue to survive and thrive!!!

11.10.12 Cleanup on Deep Run & Race Road in AA Co. w/ Lockheed Martin & Members of the Public : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a cleanup event on Saturday 11/10/12 and was fortunate to work with several groups to help us clean up Deep Run--a section of the Patapsco River. Thanks to all of you from HCC, UMBC and Lockheed Martin for helping our PHG friends to remove an amazing 2000 pounds of debris from this watershed!! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots), there were some interesting items removed as well. We found and removed a concrete saw cart (350 lbs), 100’ of plastic conduit, a refrigerator, a car bumper, a baby doll head, a washing machine tub, a wooden pallet, a metal folding chair and a section of chain link fence. A special thank you to our stream captains and helpers: Jeff Klein, Jon Merryman and Pete McCallum. Without all of your help, this 1 ton cleanup would not have been possible!!

One of them is a section of a stream known as Breezewood Stream in Woodstock in Howard County. According to his most recent report, this is John's findings: "Stream is in good conditiion. The stream crosses one pipeline. For a stream map please see:

On the map, the western most stream is the one I named "Bon Secours"; the eastern one, joined by Bon Secours and flowing into the Patapsco, I named "Breezewood". This survey was done one day after Hurricane Sandy. Except for a few snags that did not dam the stream there was no damage. 10.27.12 Tree Planting in Patapsco State Park in Avalon Area Near Lost Lake (Patapsco River & Soapstone Branch watershed area) : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway, in partnership with Patapsco Valley State Park, sponsored its annuall fall tree planting on Saturday, October 27th with over 70 volunteers participating!!! Fifty-two new native trees were planted in the Avalon Area of Patapsco State Park, where we will plant 50 new trees in the area between the Patapsco River, Soapstone Stream and Lost Lake. Working with the park staff, we also agreed to conduct maintenance on the trees that the park planted last year, adding a little mulch and also putting fencing around the trees for the next 3 years to assist in their growth and health! Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who came from different organizations and groups and all those other families and individuals who helped make this tree planting possible, especially our park ranger friends and the volunteers you see wearing the orange vests who were a part of our Tree Captain Team who helped guide our rookie tree planters!!! This tree planting was dedicated in the honor of Clark Wagner, a long-time PHG member, who recently passed away. 10.26.12 Tree Planting Prep Work before the 10.27.12 Tree Planting : The week before our annual fall tree planting, several energetic volunteers helped us get set up for the big planting day on Saturday, October 27th!!! Lots of work to be done. Recon the area and create a tree planting landscape plan, mark the areas where trees are to be planted, accept deliveries of the trees and tree supplies (fencing to keep the deer out, wood stakes, root enhancer, tree braiding, etc.). Our site is located in the Avalon Area of Patapsco State Park, where we will plant 50 new trees in the area between the Patapsco River, Soapstone Stream and Lost Lake. Working with the park staff, we also agreed to conduct maintenance on the trees that the park planted last year, adding a little mulch and also putting fencing around the trees for the next 3 years to assist in their growth and health! 10.25.12 Cleanup Along Patapsco River off Hammonds Ferry Road With Structural Employees : Twenty-one volunteers removed 5,160 pounds of trash and junk from this area in just a few short hours! The Patapsco Heritage Greenway partnered with Structural and their employees to conduct a cleanup in the Patapsco River watershed area off of Hammonds Ferry Road in Baltimore County. Thanks to our volunteers, we removed 64 tires (2 extra large truck tires) weighing about 1,640 pounds, 80 bags of trash weighing 2,000 pounds, 20 pounds of scrap metal, and 1,500 pounds of miscellaneous construction debris and other stuff! Besides the usual litter we find at cleanups including glass and plastic bottles, cans, food wrappers and plastic bags, some of the interesting junk we removed included: 64 tires, a Christmas ornament that was hanging on a tree, a sofa, 80's boom box, an unopened box of Roy Farms Chicken pieces, a floppy disk, cardboard, part of a plastic chair, scrap metal pieces, big table leg and table top, big Styrofoam pieces, foam rubber, lots of carpeting, mattress, part of a large desk, big pile of dry wall, particle board pieces, cabinet section of a desk, cork board, buckets, lots of 2 x 4s nailed together, used lumber pieces, rubber flap to a large tractor trailer truck, carpet padding, new ball of polypropylene, 2 televisions, Oriole blanket, bottom of a bird bath, part of a pogo stick, shingles, indoor lamp shade and lamp post, knife, broken bottle pieces, Maxi sanitary pad, lot of Rolling Rock beer bottles, several dirty diapers, lots of liquor bottles, bushel of crabs, Mr. Coffee coffee pot, puzzle, old school "Trapper Keeper" binder, magazines, signs, an itsy bitsey teeny weeny tire, shoe roller skates, telescope chair, part of a kids exercise bike, work boot, carpet sample display, photograph of one of the suspected dumpers (there were two bags of deer parts left near the road) and fire extinguisher. Nature spotting includes a big fuzzy spider, a gigantic praying mantis, lots of deer bones and skulls and a mouse! Tammy and Bryan discovered a pile of car parts on the other side of the road and the group removed them! A special thanks to our Stream Captain Team members who helped run this event including Betsy McMillion, Pete McCallum, Kathy Younkin, Chris Fiorito, Jim Apgar and Structural Employee Ritchie Fletcher who recruited so many of his coworkers to help us! We also want to thank Structural for their generous donation. We will use this money to purchase more supplies for future events! Thanks to all for a successful cleanup!!!

10.13.12 CSI "Creek Scene Investigation" Workshop in Bascom Creek in Elkridge : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored its second CSI - Creek Scene Investigation Workshop on Saturday, October 13, 2012 along Shallow Run (also known as Bascom Creek) in Elkridge, Maryland. This stream is part of the Deep Run watershed area located on Howard County open space area. Participants conducted 5 simple chemistry tests to determine water quality -- ph, temperature, nitrates, phosphates and ecoli. Also participants discovered the diverse macroinvertebrates they found in the stream. This workshop was to encourage participants to discover stream life and understand the types of tests taken to determine water quality, as well as try to determiine the causes of any pollution. Special thanks to PHG member Ann Coren for leading the chemistry part of this workshop, and Jeff Klein, PHG's expert on macroinvertebrate identification! Also special thanks to our other CSI Captain Team members -- Pete McCallum, Pete Block, Betsy McMillion and Cathy Hudson who helped make this workshop a big success!

9.29.12 Patapsco River Cleanup Near Levering Avenue in Patapsco State Park in Elkridge : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a cleanup event on a beautiful Saturday in September and was fortunate to work with several groups to help us clean up a section of the Patapsco River near Levering Avenue. Thanks to all of you from UMBC, HCC, Boy Scout Troop 432 and of course our PHG members, we were able to remove 1755 lbs. of trash and debris from this area! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots), there were some interesting items removed as well. We found and got rid of part of a brick wall; 46 tires—including tire parts; scrap metal—including a metal grate, a rivet to an old bridge, a chunk of chain-link fencing, various wires, and structural steel from an old bridge extension (probably washed down from the swinging bridge during Tropical Storm Agnes); pool steps; a tampon in its package (thank goodness!); a woman’s rubber shoe; some basketballs; flip flops; a ladies sandal; a tarp; a safety cone; 2 sets of underwear; a Maryland Terrapin bag; child’s water shoes; a stuffed animal; a piece of railroad tie; a radiator hose; Styrofoam; rags; rubber drains; boxer shorts; sweat pants; tube socks; 2 Direct TV cable boxes; and several items with no known identity!! Among the garbage—and other debris—we were still able to enjoy some nature spotting. We saw a Blue Heron in flight, a baby black snake and a red-tailed hawk. 9.29.12 Watershed Scavenger Hunt At Catonsville Elementary Environthon : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway set up an exhibit at the Catonsville Elementary Envirothon Event on school grounds promoting our popular watershed scavenger hunt. Ten adults and 17 children searched for 20 items on the watershed scavenger hunt list around the school grounds that taught them about watershed issues -- storm drains, invasive plants, trees, etc.! If they completed everything off the list, they won a prize! Special thanks to PHG Members Dave Hutton and Kathy Swan who educated the participants about the importance of each of the items on the list to learn about our storm water pollution issues in a fun and interesting way!!!!

9.23.12 English Ivy removal at CCBC w/ Catonsville Tree Savers : On a sunny Sunday in September, Patapsco Heritage Greenway partnered with several groups for an Invasive Plant Removal event. Our PHG leaders Jeff Klein, Pete McCallum & Pete Block joined Alvera Winkler--who organized this important event to remove and educate everyone about how deadly English Ivy can be to our local trees. Groups from Tree Savers of Catonsville, CCBC, UMBC & HCC removed and clipped Engilsh Ivy from around the trees in the Bull Run area. The thicker vines were cut and left to die on the trees. This invasive species gets out of control so quickly!! It's important to keep it at bay! We hope our volunteers were able to avoid the poison ivy around the area!! Thanks again to all who helped that day.

9.8.12 "Creek Scene Investigation" Workshop in Bascom Creek in Elkridge : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored its first CSI - Creek Scene Investigation Workshop on Saturday, September 8, 2012 along Shallow Run (also known as Bascom Creek) in Elkridge, Maryland. This stream is part of the Deep Run watershed area located on Howard County open space area. Participants conducted 5 simple chemistry tests to determine water quality -- ph, temperature, nitrates, phosphates and ecoli. Also participants discovered the diverse macroinvertebrates they found in the stream. This workshop was to encourage participants to discover stream life and understand the types of tests taken to determine water quality, as well as try to determiine the causes of any pollution. Special thanks to PHG member Ann Coren for leading the chemistry part of this workshop, and Jeff Klein, PHG's expert on macroinvertebrate identification! 8.22.12 Deep Run WaveRunner Extraction : Patapsco Heritage Greenway Members Jon Merryman, Pete McCallum, and Jeff Klein with Lockheed Martin employee Donna Pumphrey removed a 400lb. Yamaha WaveRunner from the banks of Deep Run in Anne Arundel County near Park Circle Drive in Hanover. Stream Captain Jon Merryman led a small group of PHG (incl. Pete Block), Lockheed Martin (incl. Mike Francis), and SAIC (Betsy Hall) employees in July to remove the WaveRunner from the river after digging out the rocks and mud that had filled its hull.

8.13.12 Daniels Car Removal w/ the Friends of Patapsco : Patapsco Heritage Greenway Stream Captain Team Members Jeff Klein and Pete McCallum partnered with the Friends of Patapsco State Park, and the Patapsco Valley State Park staff to remove old cars from the Patapsco River watershed in the Daniels Area of the Patapsco Valley State Park. This was the fifth day of work at that site for FPVSP members Paul and Mike Farragut. Park ranger Mike brought along two members from the Patapsco State Park maintenance department to help with the days tasks. The Dingo machine with the hydraulic arms and the John Deere cart were supplied by the park for this project.

The students did an excellent job in cleaning up one of the most heavily used parts of the park. 6.2.12 Invasive Plant Removal in Hilton Area of Patapsco State Park With REI Friends and Others : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway partnered with REI employees, Wounded Warriors and Patapsco State Park staff and families of these groups to sponsor an invasive plant removal event on a beautiful Saturday in the Hilton Area of Patapsco State Park. May 2012 Deep Run Cleanup Along Race Road With Jack & Tom Flynn : On May 12th and May 28th, 2012, Tom and Jack Flynn--a father and son team--spent 8 hours cleaning up a section of Deep Run along Race Road in Elkridge, and High Tech Road in Hanover. They removed a lot of debris caused by careless littering and trash washed down the storm drains into the stream, including tires and quite a bit of junk! 5.18.12 Herbert Run Stream Cleanup With MTA Employees Near Arbutus Fire Station : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a stream cleanup in the Arbutus Area along a section of Herbert Run, just behind the Arbutus Fire Station parking lot. Thanks to our wonderful partners, the Maryland Transit Administration (who brought along several energetic volunteers!) and some of our other PHG friends, we removed an amazing 525 pounds from this watershed area! This area is one of our most troublesome areas with litter. It is difficult picking up much of the small trash items there as a result of litter washed down nearby storm drains and from illegal dumping. PHG has been working with the Arbutus and Halethorpe communities to clean up this area, and what a difference our volunteers made in just a few hours! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots), volunteers also removed Styrofoam chunk pieces, a bicycle seat, iron pipes & Rebar, a paint bucket (one of our ingenious volunteers reused it to collect trash!), large amount of broken glass, a blue tarp, the back of a toilet, a flip flop, an old army tarp, many pieces of plastic bags tied around tree limbs and bushes, a foam chair cushion, a car scissor jack, clothing hangers, a purple silk flower, dryer sheets, a 4 x 4 piece of lumber, an abundance of cardboard that was left to a dumpster which blew into the stream, a ceramic coffee mug buried in the dirt, fluorescent tube pieces, and Yvette found a $20 bill and went to the nearby ice cream shop to buy ice cream for her partner!!! Some wonders of nature included: a male mallard duck--referred to as a “quacker bird,” many different song birds, white butterflies and even a few fish in the stream. Special thanks to our Stream Captain Team members Betsy McMillion, Jeff Klein and Pete McCallum who led the group. Finally, we are so grateful to Nadine Pierre-Charles from the Maryland Transit Administration! She came to our Stream Captain Training back in March and efficiently recruited several employees and helped organize today's event. We appreciate the great work of all our volunteers for a job well done!

5.11.12 Deep Run Stream Cleanup Along Race Road With the Baker Group in Elkridge/Hanover : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a stream cleanup in the Elkridge/Hanover Area along a section of Deep Run, which is part of Patapsco State Park land. Thanks to our wonderful partners, the Michael Baker Group--who brought along several energetic volunteers--as well as some of our other PHG friends, we eliminated an astonishing 1,080 pounds of debris from this watershed area! PHG has been working with Stream Watcher Jon Merryman and the park rangers to clean up this area, and what a difference these volunteers made in just a few hours! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots); volunteers also removed some old junk that had been embedded for some time from previous flooding in this flood zone. Some of these items included: a CD, 13 tires, an air conditioner, an old ringer washing machine, a part of an old TV, a part of a new TV, a snuff package, a stick ball, hockey ball, basketball, soccer ball & a tennis ball, an old safety cone, silt fencing from a construction site, a car mat, a front car bumper, big chunks of Styrofoam, a safety barrel, a plastic pan, part of a child's small pool, used lumber, an outboard motor and 15 bags of assorted garbage. Some wonders of nature included: a male pileated woodpecker, quite a few snakes, green frogs and some tiger beetles. 5.10.12 Patapsco River Orange Grove Cleanup With Hammond Middle School : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a cleanup along the Patapsco River in the Orange Grove Area of Patapsco State Park, partnering with Hammond Middle School as part of the 7th grade student service learning project. A total of 125 volunteers removed 596 pounds of trash and 196 pounds of invasive garlic mustard in just two hours from the Patapsco River watershed!! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots), some of the more interesting items removed included: 8 car tires, a wood pallet, 3 large wood planks, a “Congested Area” road sign, fencing, a flip flop, a rusted Virginia license plate, a fishing net, a bike tire, 3 feet of aluminum sheeting, Rebar, various car parts, broken glass, caution tape, a pair of pants, pipes, pieces of hard plastic and a lot of invasive garlic mustard was pulled! Volunteers even discovered the nest of a Canadian goose and a few snakes! Congratulations to Mr. Graf's Team who was the winner of all the student groups by removing an amazing 226 pounds of trash (and is featured on this site). Congratulations to Mr. Goody's Team who was the winner of all the student groups by removing an impressive 37 pounds of invasive garlic mustard. Also congratulations to Mrs. Furman's Team who was the winner of all the student groups by removing the most pieces of trash – 94! 5.6.12 Garlic Mustard Challenge 2012 : Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored its 13th annual Garlic Mustard Challenge on Sunday, May 6th, focusing on removing invasive garlic mustard in the Orange Grove Area of Patapsco State Park! Over 80 volunteers joined in to make today's event a success. For the first two hours, 7 teams competed against each other removing 961 pounds of garlic mustard in just two hours in the lower Patapsco watershed! Special thanks to all of our wonderful partners who helped sponsor this event including the Baltimore County D.E.P.S., Howard Countyy DPW Enviromental Services, Constellation Energy and R.E.I. PHG has made significant progress in the last 13 years of this event removing the large patches of garlic mustard that once existed. Although garlic mustard is still visible in the park, it is in smaller patches thanks to volunteers who have competed in the challenge over the years, as well as local students who help remove garlic mustard during invasive plant removal events! What a difference these volunteers made in just a few hours! First place winner of "Most pounds pulled per person" goes to Arbutus resident, Brian Schexnayder, who removed an amazing 294 pounds all by himself! Brian's one-man team the "most pounds pulled" and is featured on our cover photo! For this year's chef challenge, the first place adult chef winner was Alex Streat of Columbia with his "garlic mustard lasagna." The first place child chef winner was Georgia Briggs of Ellicott City with her "Patapsco pasta." A special thanks to all of our exhibitors who shared their knowledge of watershed issues with the participants: Sonja Schmitz, Wanda MacLachlan, Lauren McMillion, Jeff Klein, Vanessa Beauchamp, Glenda Weber, Angeles Morales, Melody Nevins, and Kathy Swan! 5.6.12 New Cut Road Trash & Invasive Plant Removal by HCC Student Molly Freiert : As part of a HCC Student Service Learning project, college student Molly Freiert partnered with our PHG Stream Watcher Carol Curley to complete a stream cleanup in Ellicott City. Carol’s Stream Watch Project has been to clean up the entire stream that runs parallel to New Cut Road; and she has coordinated cleanups along this stream with several groups over the past 2 years, with only one region left untouched. Molly targeted the one remaining area that needed cleaning up, removing the trash and began removing the invasive garlic mustard growing along the stream banks as well. For 12 hours, Molly collected over 10 bags of trash/garlic mustard--removing about 100 pounds from this area of the Patapsco River watershed! Great work, Molly and Carol!!!!

5.1.12 River Cleanup in Patapsco State Park Avalon Area Near Lost Lake in Baltimore County : Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a river cleanup and an invasive plant removal event on a warm and cloudy Tuesday in May, in the Avalon Area of Patapsco State Park in Baltimore County, near Lost Lake and at the beginning of the Grist Mill Trail. We send a special thanks to Glenwood Middle School who sent their 7th grade class along with teachers, staff and parent helpers, as well as some of our PHG friends to help remove an amazing 1,907 pounds of trash/invasive garlic mustard from this watershed area. The breakdown was 1,162 pounds of trash and 745 pounds of garlic mustard! Quite a bit of the larger trash was a result of debris washed down the river from the September 2011 Tropical Storm Lee. PHG has been targeting areas throughout the park for the past 12 years removing the invasive garlic mustard plant, teaching others about this "villain of the valley" and problems in general with invasive plants. PHG has been working with Patapsco State Park Rangers to clean up this area, and what a difference these volunteers made in just a few hours! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots), volunteers also removed: railroad metal pieces, a broken fishing rod, a 40 pound Hershey Chocolate pallet, hoses, a plastic cup, a piece of a small American flag and a long & heavy rope. Volunteers also noticed a lot of interesting bits of nature including birds, a water snake nest with babies and a mom, ducks, 34 turtles (they counted them!) and a black snake (not poisonous). A special thanks to our Stream Captain Team members Betsy McMillion, Pete McCallum, Kathy Younkin, Chester Kukwa, Jim Apgar, Chris Fiorito, Jenna Betts and Josh Mah who led the group. We’re also grateful to teacher Eric Jacques from Glenwood Middle School, who organized so many volunteers to come out and lend a helping hand, and the park folks for helping us remove the trash! May 2012 Storm Drain Marker & Watershed Education Distribution by Eagle Scout Julen Rodriquez : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway partnered with Julen Rodriquez of Boy Scout Crew 2302 of the National Pike District to complete his eagle scout project to install storm drain markers and distribute watershed education to over 100 homes in the community of Oella in Baltimore County. Julen also developed a power point presentation document to show future eagle scouts how to conduct this project. Thanks to Julen and the others from Boy Scout Crew 2302 for a job well done!

4.27.12 River Cleanup in Ilchester Area of Patapsco State Park With Nationwide Insurance Employees : Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a watershed cleanup on a breezy Friday afternoon in April in the Ilchester Area of Patapsco State Parkland, near the Patapsco River in Ellicott City. Special thanks to our wonderful volunteers--Nationwide Insurance employees, HCC students as well as some of our other PHG friends--to help remove 2225 pounds from the Patapsco River watershed area! Most of this trash was a result of trash and junk washed down the river from a tropical storm back in September 2011, as well as litter washed down from nearby storm drains. PHG has been working with Patapsco State Park to clean up this area and what a difference these volunteers made in just a few hours! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots); volunteers also removed: a lot of liquor and beer bottles, an inside car door handle, a rug, busted up safe, 7 car tires, McDonalds food wrappers, empty jewelry box, car keys, prescription bottle, a "weird spring thing," a lot of broken glass, part of a cart, a lot of scrap metal pieces, 30 feet of webbing, an umpire or catcher chest protector, bedsprings from a mattress, a sheet, long plastic pipe, a STUFFED DUMMY (check out the photo on this one!!!!!), boy's shoes, men's shoes, a torn up and shredded shirt hidden in the dirt, bags of garlic mustard removed, part of a wood chair, part of a tire tread, old metal chain, used diaper, canvas bag, a "disappearing hypodermic needle that was there one minute and gone the next..." fire hose, hard drive to a computer, toilet lid, knife stuck in the side of a tree, unopened can of Budweiser Beer, satellite or power cable and railroad spikes. Some interesting nature spotting included: a whole rack of deer antlers, a northern bandit water snake, a live kitten that ran away, hundreds of tadpoles and mosquito larvae! A special thanks to our PHG Stream Captain Team members Betsy McMillion, Jeff Klein and Pete McCallum who led the group, and Christopher Hill from Nationwide Insurance who organized so many volunteers to come out and lend a helping hand! 4.27.12 Watershed Scavenger Hunt at Arbutus Middle School in Arbutus : Patapsco Heritage Greenway participated in Arbutus Middle School's Earth Day Celebration with our watershed scavenger hunt. Twenty items were listed that had to deal with watershed issues, with a living classroom right on school grounds giving several examples of how we can help save our watershed! 4.24.12 River Cleanup in Orange Grove Area of Patapsco State Park With T. Rowe Price Employees : Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored another cleanup on a beautiful Tuesday, with over 20 volunteers from T. Rowe Price, Towson State University students and members of the PHG. They removed over 500 pounds of trash and litter that was found along the stream banks and in the Patapsco River in a section of Orange Grove, on the Howard County side! Volunteers worked a large area of the park and picked up a surprising amount of trash. Most of this trash was a result of trash and litter washed down nearby storm drains, and from debris washed down the river from the September 2011 Tropical Storm Lee. PHG has been working with Patapsco State Park to clean up this area, and what a difference these volunteers made in just a few hours! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots), volunteers also removed: a car tire, tire tread, broken crate, fishing line, scrap metal pieces, metal cable, an old flip top soda can, 5 pound aluminum pot, tiny rubber tire, plastic fishing container, a Cheetos bag, Styrofoam cups and pieces, rope rug, boards with nails, Rebar, sand bags, an "exorcist baby doll in the river," a broken flip flop, a good flip flop, an old boot, 5 gallon bucket, cell phone, tissues, pieces of a bike, pens, vacuum cleaner hose, pile of rusted metal on the hill, fence post, 1/2 of a tire, tomato cage, fishing net and a fishing line with a beer can attached to it! Nature spotting included: Canadian geese, osprey, a live deer and a deer carcass. A special thanks to our Stream Captain Team members Betsy McMillion, Pete McCallum and Dave Hutton who led the group, and Jeffrey Rist and Kristen Dodson from T. 4.21.12 Stream Cleanup Along Coopers Run & Historic #9 Trolley Trail in Oella : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway partnered with G.O.C.A, Salem Lutheran Church and the Southwest Baltimore County Democratic Club to clean Coopers Run--along the #9 Trolley Trail. Leading this group of 62 volunteers was our stream captains Jeff Klein & Julia Graham, along with the help of Jay Patel; the G.O.C.A. President. What they removed from this stream was the usual stream trash including plastic bottles, food wrappers, cans and glass liquor bottles. Some of the more interesting items found included: about 500# scrap metal, about 30# of lumber, 2 tires, carpeting, blankets, 25' lead pipe, a moped, tent stakes in a bag and an engine block in the stream--which will need a winch to remove. They also noticed heavy erosion with some outflow pipes being exposed. Nature spotting included: a turtle, deer and ducks in the stream. Many thanks to all those who helped do such a great job cleaning up this portion of the Patapsco Watershed!

4.20.12 Patapsco River Cleanup in the Daniels Area of Patapsco State Park With Hollifield Station Elementary School : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a watershed cleanup on a beautiful Tuesday in April in the Daniels Area of Patapsco State Park in Ellicott City. Special thanks to the wonderful 5th grade students, teachers, staff and parent helpers from Hollifield Station Elementary School, along with our PHG Stream Captain Team -- Betsy McMillion, Pete McCallum, Kathy Younkin, Dave Hutton and Lisa Wingate -- to help remove an amazing 318 pounds of trash and invasive garlic mustard from this watershed area!! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots), volunteers also removed: asphalt, bricks, paper towels, gum wrappers, a potato chip bag and even a golf ball. Some of the nature spottings included: a snake, a black butterfly with polka dots, a turtle, a toad and worms. We would also like to thank Teacher Lori Speelman who organized so many volunteers to come out and lend a helping hand! Congratulations to the following teams who removed a lot of trash and garlic mustard: First place was Mrs. Varner's Class with 95 pounds; Second place was Ms. Powell's Class with 84 pounds; Third place was Ms. Lutzen's class with 83 pounds; and last, but not least, was Ms. West's class with 56 pounds! 4.14.12 River Cleanup Along River Road in Catonsville with McCormick Taylor employees, Alunini from the University of Scranton and other PHG Friends : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a river cleanup on Saturday, April 14th in Catonsville along River Road. Thank you to our wonderful partners, Graham Boardman, Jonathan Forte & Heidi Gray, who brought with them several energetic volunteers! Along with some of our other PHG friends, we removed an amazing 1445 pounds of trash from this watershed area! Most of this trash was a result of litter washed down nearby storm drains. PHG worked with the employees of McCormick Taylor, volunteers from the University of Scranton's National Alumni Day of Service and students from UMBC & HCC to clean up this area--and what a difference these volunteers made in just a few hours! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups, volunteers also removed: a fake skeleton jaw bone, carpets, a rug, a gurney, large plastic tubing/pipes, conduit, an old motor & cylinder, enough car parts for a complete car, historic aluminum cans from the 80's (pull-tops), old Singer sewing machines, old highway signs, a rain gutter, various scrap metal/pipes/poles, clothing (underwear, shoes, socks, pants), beach & basketballs, tires, wood scraps/fencing/plywood, a truck bumper, a dumb bell, a racing skate, a plastic Donald Duck lawn ornament, a box of electrical items, plastic fencing, hubcaps, a large headlight, a trash can, a garden hose, a dishwasher rack, 3/4 of a frying pan, the remnants of a party, and the anchor from the Titanic? (Ha-ha!) Nature spotting included: small fish & thousands of tadpoles, a deer carcass & a dead woodpecker. 4.14.12 New Cut Road Stream Cleanup : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a stream cleanup along New Cut Road, in the Worthington Park area. Special thanks to our wonderful partners from the Boy Scouts (Pack 495, Troop 615), the Howard County Rotaracts and Mt. Hebron NHS who all brought several energetic volunteers! With the remarkable efforts of these groups, as well as some of our PHG friends, we removed an amazing 2300 pounds of trash and litter from this watershed area!! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots), volunteers also removed 14 tires! Some of the interesting items found: mostly rusted scrap metal & pipes, construction debris such as wire and cables, BGE supplies, lids to plastic tubs, traffic cones, a large indoor/outdoor carpet stuck in a tree and rock (probably from the flood), an old water heater, a bike frame, a lawn chair, a sled, an arrow from a crossbow, an unused shotgun shell, various parts of car bumpers & a 1953 Plymouth Belvedere hubcap in excellent condition. Great work and special thanks to the Stream Captains Carol & Brian Curley, and to all of our volunteers for a job well done!!

4.14.12 Deep Run Cleanup Along Pebble Creek Drive in Elkridge : The Patapsco heritage Greenway sponsored a stream cleanup in Elkridge along a section of Deep Run known as Pebble Creek. Thanks to our wonderful partners, the Pebble Creek Drive Neighbors, HCC & PHG volunteers, we were able to do some very important work that was a bit different from our “normal” stream cleanups. There was only a small amount of the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots) that was removed. The main focus of this event was on clearing water flow channels of dense natural vegetation blocking the creek during rain events that created additional bank erosion as the water searched for alternate paths. Nature sightings included: a deer rib cage, small fish and a one-legged frog! A special thanks to our Stream Captain Team members Jim Apgar and Gary Brown, and great work to all of our volunteers for a job well done!

4.13.12 Deep Run Cleanup Along Race Road With Constellation Energy & Lockheed Martin Employees in Elkridge : 47 volunteers from Contellation Energy & BGE, Lockheed Martin, PHG and students from HCC & Towson helped us clean up about 1.5 TONS of debris from the Patapsco Watershed!! What we found was usual stream trash including a lot of plastic & glass bottles, food wrappers, cans, liquor bottles & flasks, styrofoam pieces, treated wood & scrap metal. We also recovered 65 tires, 21 w/rims--9 lg. truck, 10 small truck & 46 car tires, including racing slicks. Some of the more interesting items found and removed were: a reel of barbed wire, a 3-speed bike covered in moss, a softball, a boot, toy hatchets, a flip flop, oyster shells, a rusted propane tank, a motor, a fiberglass boat cresting a dam, an upside down boat embedded in the stream, a green hulk fist & a farm gate. Nature spotting included: deer horns & a hoof, a tiny snake, ants, bees & butterflies. Thank you all for the help--we couldn't have done all this without you!

4.12.12 Patapsco River Orange Grove Cleanup With Hammond Middle School : The Patapsco Heritage Greenway sponsored a cleanup along the Patapsco River in the Orange Grove Area of Patapsco State Park. PHG partnered with Hammond Middle School as part of the 7th grade student service learning project to remove trash and invasive garlic mustard from the Patapsco River watershed. A total of 111 volunteers removed 1,787 pounds of trash and 244 pounds of invasive garlic mustard in just two hours! Some of the interesting trash removed include: pieces of lumber, a wooden pallet, various metal railroad parts, a horse feedbag, some sandbags, aluminum siding, two pairs of old children's shoes, styrofoam cups, plastic grocery bags, wire, a very long pipe and a very large pair of mens undershorts, large truck tire with a metal rim, small truck tire and 2 regular truck tires. Congratulations to Team 13 who were the winners of all the student groups who removed an amazing 451 pounds of trash and 147 different items of trash! Congratulations to Team 10 who was the winner of all the student groups who removed an amazing 68 pounds of invasive garlic mustard! Special thanks to Teacher Jennifer Furman, who organized this year's service learning cleanup project and the PHG Stream Captain Team who helped run the event including: Betsy McMillion, Jeff Klein, Pete McCallum, Kathy Younkin, Kathy Swan, Dave Hutton, Chris Fiorito and HCC Student helpers Yessica Calderon, Victor Ramier and Rashard Hill! 3.17.12 Cleanup Along Northfield Elementary Stream in Ellicott City : The Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway partnered with the Northfield Elementary PTA for a cleanup along the stream that runs through Northfield Elementary School! Special thanks to the 85 volunteers who showed up throughout this event to help remove 15 bags of trash from this watershed area! Aside from the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags and food wrappers we usually find in our cleanups (washed down storm drains from litter in the streets and parking lots), volunteers also removed a lot of balls (lacrosse, basketball and other sports), a Chinese box, beach pail, big plastic sheet, styrofoam, half a frisbee, corrugated pipe metal, bike helmet, doll, hat, broken swing, canteen, big truck mud flap, and a big orange plastic USPS pallet! 02.19.12 Orange Grove Patapsco River cleanup with the World Mission Society Church of God Members : The Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway sponsored its first group cleanup on a cold and chilly February Sunday in scenic Patapsco State Park in the Orange Grove Area along a section of the Patapsco River running parallel to the Grist Mill Trail! Special thanks to our wonderful partners, the World Mission Society Church of God, who brought along several energetic volunteers, as well as some of our other PHG friends, to help remove an amazing 2,500 pounds from this watershed area! Most of this trash was a result of trash and litter that was washed down the river from the September 2011 Tropical Storm Lee. PHG has been working with Patapsco State Park rangers to clean up sections of the river in the park for the past several months, and what a difference these volunteers made in just a few hours! 2.19.12 Stream Watcher Jepsen Family's Report on Patapsco River - Hollifield Area of Patapsco State Park : on February 19, 2012, PHG's wonderful stream watcher Jepsen family (Anne, Esben, Rikke and Kim) conducted their first stream watcher recon of 2012 along a section of the Patapsco River in the Hollifield Area of Patapsco State Park! Special notes on their report include:

Biggest problem you see in your section: Erosion on both banks and this time much more on the left bank which can be seen from the pictures. There are still plenty of logs and branches piled up onto the left bank further down the stream, but they don’t seem to move further.

Potential areas for buffer enhancement, stream restoration, retrofit, or educational campaign: Something should definitely be done to stop erosion but probably first when building of the bridge has been completed.

Would you like to see the FPVHG perform any project work here? No.

General comments: Just like in October, we barely saw any evidence of wildlife in or around the stream probably because of the season. There was even more water that in October despite it had been a long while since we have had rain.

1.20.12 Recon Along Pebble Creek/Deep Run in Elkridge : On a cold and chilly Friday afternoon, the PHG Stream Recon Team (Jeff Klein, Cam MacLachlan, Betsy McMillion, Tim Titus, Kit Valentine and Stream Watcher Gary Brown), walked along a section of Deep Run in Elkridge known locally as "Pebble Creek." This recon was a result of Stream Watcher Gary Brown's concerns about erosion, areas along the stream that were damming up from fallen limbs and branches washed down the stream, as well as green algae that appeared off an area adjacent to the Timbers of Troy Golf Course. The following photos show some litter along the stream and along the stream banks. As a result of this recon, Stream watcher Gary Brown and Stream Captain Tim Titus will conduct a future cleanup of this stream removing trash and unblocking the dammed areas (causing flooding) in April. Special thanks to the stream team for their work in helping restore another stream to its original condition! More details on the report will follow and be reported to local county officials for action.

11.18.11 Tree Maintenance at Patapsco State Park, Belmont Area off Belmont Woods Road in Elkridge : On a cold Friday afternoon, 19 volunteers helped the Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway conduct tree maintenance on trees that were previously planted. In one section, we monitored American Chestnut tree seedlings that were planted 3 years ago in conjunction with the Maryland Forestry Board in an attempt to bring back this species of tree that was plagued by a blight that wiped out many of these trees throughout the east coast in the early 1900s. Unfortunately, only 5 of these seedlings survived. We also conducted tree maintenance on seedlings that were planted by Maryland DNR last year with the assistance of Patapsco Heritage Greenway volunteers and as part of an eagle scout project. Volunteers pulled out weeds in both areas around the surviving trees, placed any needed mulch and straightened up the stakes and/or removed any of the shelters from tree seedlings that died. Special thanks to our tree captain team: Jeff Klein, Tim Titus, Jamie Petrucci and Betsy McMillion. And a big thanks to all the volunteers who came out to lend a helping hand on this chilly fall afternoon! A job well done in only a few hours to help these tree seedlings continue to thrive in an area of Patapsco State parkland near the Historic Belmont property in Elkridge, Maryland.

11.12.11 Stream Cleanup Along Deep Run off of Race Road in AA County : The Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway partnered with Lockheed Martin IS&GS, sponsoring another cleanup on Saturday, November 12, on a beautiful morning along a section of Deep Run & Piney Run on Patapsco State Park property in Anne Arundel County off of Race Road.

Special thanks to Stream Captains Jon Merryman and Jeff Klein who led 26 volunteers to clean up over 5,000 pounds of trash and junk from this watershed area!

Most of this debris is a result of illegal dumping along this remote section of Race Road. Jon Merryman has led a team of volunteers since April of 2011, with 18 LM employees/family members contributing over 80 man hours of their time, plus 20 volunteers from the public donating their own time, which has resulting in over 7 tons of garbage being removed along the roadside and parkland in this flood zone area. If you're interested in following the cleanup progress of this section of Patapsco State Park, please visit our google map of the area at http://g.co/maps/55mdd. Over the winter, we'll be documenting all the large items we can find to map out our strategy for 2012.

Aside from the usual bottles, cans, fast food wrappers and plastic bags we normally find, we also removed some interesting items including: car tires, truck tires, tractor trailer tires, sofas, box springs, mattresses, TVs, cinder blocks, sheet metal, rusted auto parts, inner tubes, oil filters, PVC pipes, bakery truck trays, shipping pallets, a deer stand ladder, a No Parking sign, used lumber, piles of broken antique glass drinking bottles, and scores of other unique items – totaling over 5,000 pounds of junk and debris – in a mere three hours.

11.5.11 Tree Planting Along Thistle Run In Patapsco State Park Land & Prep Work Days Before! : On a chilly, but sunny Saturday morning, over 100 volunteers came out to help us plant 70 trees and 10 bushes as part of a riparian buffer along the headwaters of a small stream in Catonsville, Maryland known as Thistle Run, located adjacent to the Patapsco Horse Center off of Frederick Road. This area has been on the Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway's targeted tree planting area for several years. In 2011, we were able to establish a partnership with Patapsco State Park and the Maryland DNR Ecosystem Restoration Watershed Services to conduct a tree planting along this stream; we marked areas for five different species of trees and bushes to be planted, including 40 Sycamore Trees, 10 Red Osier Dogwood bushes, 10 Black Gum trees, 10 Willow Oak Trees and 10 Pin Oak Trees. A lot of planning is involved with a tree planting. On Wednesday, November 2, volunteers game out to mark where the trees were to be planted and flags were placed with symbols to identify the type of species to be planted at each location. On Friday, November 5, volunteers helped with the acceptance of the delivery of the trees, bushes and supplies and organized them in preparation for Saturday's tree planting.

Aside from our wonderful Patapsco Heritage Greenway members and other individuals who just came out to lend a helping hand, the following groups came out to help: W.R. Grace Green Team, Community College of Baltimore Catonsville Campus' Phil Theta Kappa, Howard Community College students from Phil Theta Kappa, Rouse Scholars and Environmental Science students, U.M.B.C. students, Community college of Carroll County students, Middle School students from Windsor Middle, Sudbrook Middle and Catonsville Middle Schools, Mid Atlantic Hiking Group, Friends of Patapsco State Park, Cub scouts from Troop 373, Troop 65 and Troop 540, Howard County Legacy Leadership for the Environment, Woodlawn High School students, and help from Volunteer Ranger Jamie Petucci and our other friends from Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection & Sustainability, Patapsco State Park and Maryland DNR!

We also named many of our trees in memory of some special people, including Teddy Betts (former PHG member who passed away last year), Conor James O'Sullivan (family and friends recently send donations to us in his memory to help pay for some supplies). Other volunteers named them after themselves or some other interesting names, including: Fred, Samantha, Wilson, Fiona, Jerry, Razor, Sherbert the Willow, Felsha, Kiester, Pokey, Squibby, Rock, Airy, Smokey, Bob, Frank, Fred, Randy, Orten, Herman, Jeff, Jeremy, Worm (named the tree after a worm they found...see photo), Timmy, Sudbrook, Zoom, Phi, Theta and Kappa!

Nov. 2011 Josh Olivier--Eagle Scout Storm Drain Stenciling Project in the Grovemont Community in Elkridge : Josh Olivier, a Boy Scout in Troop 1022 in Howard County, was working on his Eagle Scout Project in partnership with the Patapsco Heritage Greenway. For his project he directed a group of scouts to paint the message, “Don’t Dump, Chesapeake Bay Drainage” on approximately 40 storm drains in the Grovemont Community in Elkridge. This remarkable young man did an amazing job from start to finish; from obtaining permission from the Home Owners Association and the Department of Public Works, establishing fundraising for materials, acquiring the stencils, writing and distributing 170 fliers to each house in the community and completing the Storm Drain Stenciling. Josh and his group also distributed the “Bay Wise Maryland Yardstick” brochure from the University of Maryland Extension Office to educate the residents on how we all can help keep our local waterways healthy. It explained that items such as motor oil, antifreeze, paint, yard waste, plastics, etc. can be hazardous to the ecosystems in the Chesapeake Bay. They can flow into the storm drains, run into local streams and rivers, and eventually end up in the Bay, contaminating it and harming wildlife—a message that the Patapsco Heritage Greenway wants everyone to know! Josh’s Eagle Scout project benefited the Patapsco Heritage Greenway, the citizens of the Grovemont Community and the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Thanks to Josh and all who helped with this project for an incredible job well-done!!

10.28.11 Tree Maintenance & Cleanup in Patapsco State Park : The Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway sponsored a fall tree planting on Friday, October 28st! What a beautiful afternoon in the Orange Grove Area of Patapsco State Park, on the Grist Mill Trail which runs paralllel to the Patapsco River, close to Relay. With the help and assistance of the wonderful Patapsco State Park rangers, they helped us recycle some of the wood stakes and wire mesh cages to use for other trees in the park and brought a park truck to help us remove some trash we picked up along the way too! Thirteen wonderful volunteers helped us pull out weeds growing up the trees, trim tree limbs and readjust wooden stakes so trees that were previously planted will continue to grow along a riparian buffer off of a section of the Patapsco River that runs along the Grist Mill Trail! Special thanks to our Tree Captains Betsy McMillion, Tim Titus and Ranger Jamie Petrucci as well as all our other wonderful helpers that joined us to help nurture these trees providing an important buffer to this stream and picking up all that other trash that was washed down the river in this area from the September 7th Tropical Storm Lee! We spotted a large flock of black birds hanging around by our site, a beautiful blue heron and unfortunately, we saw a lot of plastic bags that were washed down the river and ended up on the trees after the water level went down. Some of the more interesting trash we removed that day include: A stack of Pokemon cards in a plastic zip lock bag, mini toy vehicles, pair of sunglasses, plastic toy policeman, toy detective badge, a steel locker from the railroad, 2 tires, basketballs, two decorative edging bricks, a Baltimore County Fire Department canoe paddle and lots of plastic bag pieces, as well as plastic and glass bottles!

10.25.11 Baltimore County Small Watershed Mgmt. Plan Community Meeting : The Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway partnered with Baltimore County Department of Environmental Services & Sustainability to hold the second community meeting at the Catonsville Library to receive input from PHG members and others from the general public to understand the study going underway evaluating the lower Patapsco River watershed area. Residents were invited to give input about their priorities or concerns about the watershed. American Rivers and Maryland Department of Natural Resources staff also gave a short presentation on the recent removal of Union and Simkins Dams along the Patapsco River. 10.23.11 Patapsco River Cleanup at Orange Grove in Patapsco State Park : The Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway sponsored another cleanup on Sunday, October 23, on a beautiful morning along the Patapsco River in the Orange Grove Area of Patapsco State Parl!

Special thanks to Park Ranger Jamie Petrucci for leading the group to areas that desperately needed cleaned and Principal Debbie Rosenberg, of Beit Tikvah, who helped us partner this cleanup event with Kesher School students and their families!

Most of this debris was a direct result of Tropical Storm Lee which on September 7th the river rose pretty high on the river banks which is why you found so much debris hanging in the trees!

With 30 volunteers, we were able to remove an estimated 400 pounds of trash and debris from the Patapsco River watershed in just two hours! In case you didn't hear at the end of our activity, besides the usual plastic bags, aluminum cans, food wrappers and glass/plastic bottles, here are some of the more interesting things we collected: a boot, tires, pair of pants, boxer shorts, glove, fruit roll up wrapper, Slim Jim wrapper, lots and lots of plastic bag pieces, shoe laces, green rubber mat, pair of socks, drinking straws, fork, radio, sand bags, phone, bunch of electrical wires, beer cans, detergent bottle, the back of a Progressive Insurance card, foam cushion, hub cap, sweater, flip flop, center block, broken glass, orange construction barrier barrel, soccer ball, big black plastic pipe, futon mattress, trash can lid, part of a bridge and a woolen cap from the Scottish Islands!

Special thanks again to all our wonderful volunteers who made a big difference in only a couple of hours!

10.22.11 Tiber Hudson Branch Cleanup After Tropical Storm Lee : The Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway sponsored another cleanup in the historic district of Ellicott City on Saturday morning of October 22, 2011. Special thanks to Kim for bringing her chain saw and the use of her pickup. Special thanks to all those volunteers who also offered to use their vehicles to transport trash to the dumpsters, as well as all the tools you brought to make our clean up easier! Special thanks to our stream captain team who helped lead our volunteers -- Betsy McMillion, Tim Titus, Jeff Klein, Ed Lilley, Kathy Swan, Justin McMillion and Ted Willard. And a special thanks to our friends from Howard County's Department of Public Works who provided dumpsters for the cleanup!

As you know, most of this debris was a direct result of Tropical Storm Lee which on September 7th flooded many of the streets and several buildings in the historic district where the Tiber Hudson branch runs through town.

The dumpsters and the pile of debris have all been removed thanks to our Howard County Government friends. The only area we were not able to remove was some trash that was piled near the Brick Block area, and we are working on trying to figure out how we can get that removed ASAP.

With 30 volunteers, we were able to remove an estimated 4,000 pounds of trash and debris from the Tiber Hudson watershed! Besides the usual plastic bags, aluminum cans, food wrappers and glass/plastic bottles, here are some of the more interesting things we collected: a penny, old gutter, coat rack, lots of lumber pieces, sand bags, piece of tarp, CD case, lots of plastic bag pieces, power cord, garden hose, lots of hats, cabinets with shelves, pieces of plastic, ash tray, electric guitar petal and cable, rolling pin, boards, hub cap, television, hockey puck, door, coffee cup, fork, plates, 1970 Slimline phone, drum stick, lacrosse stick, pieces from a deck, rebar, counter top, Atlantis videotape, microphone, vibrator, rubber tire, glasses case, flashlight, welcome mat, prophylactics, huge stumps, lots of drift wood, keys, concrete blocks, two halves of a kayak, ninja turtle sheets, basket ball, sewer cover, bag of sweaters, rug, bumper car part, and wood pallet!:

We have reported our concerns to Howard County Government about a barrel of cooking grease in parking lot F, next to the stream which we believe would pose a threat to stream health. We also reported that the litter fence that used to be in the parking lot before Tropical Storm Lee was washed away and requested that it be replaced to stop any further litter from blowing into this section of the Tiber Hudson.

10.21.11 Tree Maintenance along Herbert Run Stream at Arbutus Elementary School : The Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway sponsored a fall tree planting on Friday, October 21st! What a beautiful afternoon in Arbutus, on the school property of Arbutus Elementary School. Thanks to the the nice neighbors living off of Birch Avenue (The Sparrows & the Muhas), they let us cut through their yard to quickly get to the tree planting site. Four wonderful volunteers helped us pull out weeds growing up the trees, trim tree limbs and readjust wooden stakes so trees that were previously planted will continue to grow along a riparian buffer off of a section of Herbert Run that runs along Arbutus Elementary School property! 10.15.11 Tree Maintenance Along Herbert Run at UMBC & Arbutus Middle School : The Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway sponsored a fall tree planting on Saturday, October 15th! What a beautiful morning in Arbutus, off of Shelbourne Avenue! Seventeen wonderful volunteers helped us pull out weeds growing up the trees, trim tree limbs and readjust wooden stakes so trees that were previously planted will continue to grow along a riparian buffer off of a section of Herbert Run that runs along U.M.B.C. property and Arbutus Middle School. Ouch, for the first time ever, we discovered some wasps that made their nest in one of our trees. But brave volunteers, Doug Stull and Ken Smith, managed to continued to help even after being stung by those nasty things! 10.13.11 Bloede Dam History/Proposed Removal of Dam Talktos of Bloede Dam for Next Week's History Talk : The Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway presented an informal history talk about Bloede Dam and invited American Rivers to explain why they are considering its removal. Betsy McMillion, FPVHG Executive Director, gave a power point presentation of important historical facts about Bloede Dam which explained why it is placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the photos you see here were part of the powerpoint presentation. The audience was invited to share their memories and stories about Bloede Dam from the past. Later Serena McClain from American Rivers was invited to talk about the removal of two dams along the lower Patapsco River -- Union Dam and Simkins Dam -- and why the removal of Bloede Dam is now being considered. Special thanks to Kathy Younkin for taking photos of the presentation and to all others who helped make this an interesting and informative night for a better understanding of the pros and cons of removing this dam!

10.8.11 Environmental Fair at Catonsville Elementary School : On Saturday, October 8, FPVHG Members Jeff Klein and Dave Hutton set up an exhibit for the Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway at Catonsville Elementary School for their first ever environmental fair! Our college student intern Laura Bartock, and HCC student Kasey Campitell also lent a helping hand to guide students on a fun-filled watershed scavenger hunt on the school grounds, searching for different types of trees, invasive plants, native plants, storm drains, sewer manhole covers and lots of other nature items explaining how they all relate to our watershed! 10.2.11 Water Quality Testing at Bascom Creek in Elkridge, Md. : CIS Event! (better known as Creek Scene Investigation) On a chilly Monday afternoon, PHG member volunteers joined forces with Howard Community College for the first fall CSI (creek scene investigation) along a section of Deep Run known as Bascom Creek, located in Elkridge, Maryland. Five volunteers scooped up samples of macroinvertrabrates (better known as "critters") they discovered to help determine this stream's quality. Special thanks to our volunteers: HCC Professor Debby Luquette, her wonderful honors biology student, Jaelyn Bos, Dave Hutton, Pat Hatton and Betsy McMillion! Come and join us for our "CSI" workshop coming up on October 29th!

10.1.11 Herbert Run Stream Cleanup in Arbutus, Md. off Southwestern Blvd. behind Fire Station : Twelve volunteers braved the cold, damp and rainy weather on Saturday, October 1, to pick up approximately 440 pounds of trash from a section of Herbert Run, located off of Southwestern Blvd., behind the Fire Station parking lot. Special thanks to our volunteers from Arbutus Improvement Assn., HCC and CCBC college students and other PHG members and friends! Usual stream trash including plastic bottles, food wrappers, cans and glass bottles. Most interesting items removed include: a pool table ball, beach umbrella, TV antenna, a piece of a Swifter broom, and an Indian chewing tobacco wrapper that said "for sale in India only" (it cost $.03) and all the vices -- lots of beer and liquor bottles, plastic shot glasses, empty "dime bags," "crack" pipes, cigar and cigarette wrappers, underwear, and a syringe. We also uncovered a metal door, big chunks of Styrofoam packing material, old pull tops off of an aluminum can, a brick, electric outlet still in its case, fluorescent light bulbs, pieces of a Styrofoam cup, rainbow socks, "wife beater" type undershirt, electrical switches, leather belt, filled baby diapers, car mat, plastic storage box, blanket, fire extinguisher, Double A and other large batteries, part of a wooden door, cardboard pieces, used lumber and a rake. We collected lots and lots of plastic bags that were hanging on trees and tangled in the water and vegetation along the stream banks! One of our volunteers said "They need to ban plastic bags!!!!!" Some interesting nature spottings included: hole opening in bunch twigs for some kind of animal, water striders and lots of interesting varieties of mushrooms/fungus on trees, spotted by our visiting Virginia Master Naturalist Patty Maloney!

The following 7 volunteers have completed our workshop and are now ready to go out and start monitoring a section of river or a stream within the Patapsco River Valley! Congratulations to June & Darrell Trevethan who adopted an area of the Patapsco River off the Hollifield Area off of Dogwood and Dead Run! Congratulations to Denisse Escalante who is adopting a stream in the Ilchester Area of Ellicott City! Congratulations to R. James Disharoon who has adopted a section of Herbert Run in Arbutus! Also congratulations to our other graduates: Jeff Klein, Dan Kovalsky and Pete McCallum! These folks will help us truly make a difference in the next few months by closely monitoring and identifying any problems in their adopted waterways!

July 2010 Storm Drain Stenciling Project in Catonsville Community : Boy Scout Bruce Donoghue, from Troop 1022 earned his Eagle Scout Award from a project partnering with the Friends of Patapsco Valley & Heritage Greenway, with a storm drain stenciling and watershed education project in the summer of 2010. Targeting the Rollingwood neighborhood in Catonsville, Bruce led a group of scouts to distribute information to local neighbors about how to stop water pollution in their own backyard and a letter explaining that storm drain stenciling "disks" would be placed on storm drains in the near future! Later, the scouts placed these storm drain stencil disks (Baltimore County prefers to use disks rather than painting storm drain stencils...) on storm drains throughout the neighborhood. Special thanks and congratulations to Bruce Donoghue on earning his Eagle Scout project and helping us educate citizens about water pollution issues in the Patapsco River watershed!
